FINLAND | Internship: At work | Work conditions

The citizens of the EU and ETA do not need any permit to work in Finland. The citizens of other countries will need a worker’s residence permit.

In Finland, you will often be asked for your personal number (when dealing with the bank, tax office, etc.) To get the personal number, i.e. to get registered in Finland, you must, as soon as possible, go to the local registration office. Bring your passport or official, photo ID card with you.

A large number of Finnish people are traditionally members of trade unions, which represent employees' interests in dealings with employers, for example with regard to wages.

As a general rule, all trainees have to pay income tax in Finland. The employer has to deduct tax from the employee's income according to Finnish law.

Timing

During your working days you will probably eat your lunch at your workplace. The lunch break is about 45 minutes. If you eat at a restaurant, the service is always included in the menu price. Be aware of the fact that Finns do not do private calls at the workplace.

Time is a very important concept in Finland. Finns are always on time, and they place considerable value on punctuality. It might be considered rude if you show up late. It is therefore important to be on time for appointments, meetings, classes or other social engagements. Finns will appreciate it.
