Social Life
Finland is a part of Scandinavia and living in Finland is pretty much the same as living in other Nordic countries. Finland is known for its high technology and pure unspoiled nature. You have a chance to meet your friends and spend your freetime in city centres or in the countryside, which are not far from each other.
According to an old saying, the Finns only live during summer time. In summer time, they enjoy the warmth and brightness, the sauna and lakes in their summer cabins. During winter time, they curl up under blankets and read books, maybe also watch television.
Entertainment
During the dark winter evenings, Finns use a lot of cultural services: Movie theatres, theatres, music halls, restaurants, and libraries are crowded. People also socialize in cafeterias, restaurants, and at sport events. All big cities have high quality museums and art galleries. There are some famous Finnish musicians and bands known all over the world – like Sibelius, Merikanto, HIM, Nightwish, Lordi. Finnish architects and designers are famous too and visitors can see their products and buildings in many cities.
All universities and colleges have clubs and unions, where you can go and take part in several hobbies.
Sport
Both in the summer and in winter, there are no limits on excursions. In Finland, there are good cycling trails and plenty of cyclists. In summer, you are able to hike/walk, swim, paddle and row boats. In winter, the number one sports are cross country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, and skating. Ice hockey is another well-known popular winter sport and in summer, it is European soccer.
An old Finnish sport called “pesäpallo”, base ball, has gotten new fans too.
